The Brotherhood of Makuta

The Brotherhood of Makuta is formed to create the Rahi (animals) that would populate the Matoran Universe. Led by Makuta Miserix, they serve as protectors of the Matoran.
Makuta's Betrayal
1,001 Years Ago
Makuta Teridax, who had usurped leadership of the Brotherhood, enacts his plan to overthrow Mata Nui. He infects the Great Spirit with a virus causing him to fall into a deep slumber.
The Great Cataclysm
1,000 Years Ago
Mata Nui falls unconscious, causing a massive earthquake throughout the universe. His face crashes into the planet Aqua Magna, creating the island of Mata Nui on the surface above his face.
Arrival of the Toa Mata
Year 0 on Mata Nui
Six Toa heroes arrive on the island of Mata Nui in canisters. They have no memory of their past but know they must defeat Makuta and save the Matoran.
The Rahi War
Year 0-1
The Toa battle infected Rahi controlled by Makuta. They collect Kanohi masks to gain power and eventually confront Makuta in his underground lair.
The Bohrok Swarms
Year 1
Mechanical insectoid creatures called Bohrok awaken and begin to cleanse the island of all features. The Toa discover and defeat the Bahrag queens, transforming into the more powerful Toa Nuva.
Quest for the Mask of Light
Year 2
The Mask of Light is discovered, leading to a quest to find the prophesied seventh Toa. The Matoran Takua discovers he is destined to become Takanuva, Toa of Light.
Return to Metru Nui
Year 3
After Takanuva defeats Makuta, a passage to Metru Nui is revealed. The Turaga tell the tale of their past as Toa Metru, and the Matoran prepare to return to their original home.
The Toa Metru
1,000+ Years Ago
Six Matoran are transformed into the Toa Metru: Vakama, Nokama, Matau, Onewa, Whenua, and Nuju. They are tasked with finding the Great Disks and saving Metru Nui.
The Great Rescue
1,000+ Years Ago
The Toa Metru discover that the Matoran have been placed in pods by Makuta disguised as Turaga Dume. They rescue as many as they can before the Great Cataclysm.
The Toa Hordika
1,000+ Years Ago
While returning to Metru Nui to rescue the remaining Matoran, the Toa Metru are transformed into half-beast Toa Hordika by Visorak venom. They seek the help of Keetongu to restore their forms.
The Great Migration

The Toa Metru successfully rescue all Matoran and transport them to the island of Mata Nui. They sacrifice their Toa power to awaken the Matoran and become the Turaga leaders of the new villages.
Quest for the Mask of Life
Year 3
The Toa Nuva embark on a mission to save Mata Nui's life using the legendary Kanohi Ignika, the Mask of Life. Their journey takes them to the island of Voya Nui.
The Toa Inika
Year 3
Six Matoran from Metru Nui—Jaller, Hahli, Kongu, Nuparu, Hewkii, and Matoro—are transformed by lightning from the Red Star into the Toa Inika. They continue the search for the Mask of Life.
The Pit and Mahri Nui
Year 3
The Mask of Life plunges into the ocean, transforming the Toa Inika into water-breathing Toa Mahri. They encounter the sunken city of Mahri Nui and the villainous Barraki.
Matoro's Sacrifice
Year 3
Toa Matoro follows the Mask of Life into Karda Nui, the core of the universe. He dons the mask, sacrificing himself to save Mata Nui from death.
The Final Battle in Karda Nui
Year 4
The Toa Nuva battle the Brotherhood of Makuta in the Universe Core, eventually awakening Mata Nui. Unknown to them, Makuta has secretly taken control of Mata Nui's body.
The Awakening
Year 4
The Great Spirit Mata Nui awakens, but Makuta reveals he has taken control of his body. Mata Nui's consciousness is trapped in the Mask of Life and exiled into space.
